VATSIM Recruiting:Destination of the Week - Kansas City, Missouri

July 19th, 2010

Fly into Kansas City, Missouri from location of your choice !

Date :  July 24, 2010

Time : 18:00 hrs. EST - 24:00 hrs EST

The City of Kansas City
Kansas City is very unique as it’s not in just one state, but two, Kansas and Missouri. The more well-known portion of the city lies on the Missouri side, including Kansas City International Airport. The city is home to several major league sports teams, including the Chiefs (American football), the Royals (baseball), and the Wizards (soccer).

Kansas City was founded in the 1830s. A dock was established on the Missouri River for supplies to Westport Landing, and the land surrounding the dock was bought by “Town Company,” and renamed Town of Kansas. In 1853, Missouri included the town, and was renamed City of Kansas. The city was named Kansas City in 1889, and has remained this ever since.

Today, Kansas City is well known for the Country Club Plaza, a major shopping district known for its many shops and restaurants, barbecue, the Airline History Museum, home of the famous Save-A-Connie Lockheed Constellation, and Crown Center, home of Hallmark and a major shopping and entertainment complex in Downtown Kansas City. Many major corporations, including Sprint, Applebee’s, Garmin, H&R Block, and Hallmark, to name just a few , are headquartered here. Many tourists also come here every year to eat barbecue and see the sites.

Kansas City International Airport (MCI/KMCI)
Formerly known as Mid-Continent International Airport, MCI used to be a reliever airport when Charles B. Wheeler Airport, or Kansas City Downtown Airport, was the main airport for the Kansas City metropolitan area. Because of the jet age and the short runway of the Downtown Airport, MCI was built to accommodate jets. When it opened in 1973, almost all of the airlines moved to MCI. MCI has at various times served as a hub for Eastern, Braniff, and TWA (who operated their primary maintenance facility here), and now Southwest and Midwest have a dominant presence in the airport. Well-known for its three “circles” as terminals, it is very passenger-friendly as gate access is very easy. In 2004, the terminals underwent renovation, and will include a new rental-car facility, restrooms inside the gate area past security, and art fixtures. All three terminals have new blue floors with various designs of the airport’s layout, geometric shapes, and planets.

Polish leader, 96 others dead in Russia jet crash

SMOLENSK, Russia — Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country’s highest military and civilian leaders died on Saturday when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia, killing 97, officials said.

Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the 26-year-old Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre in Katyn forest of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland’s political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, the navy chief commander, and heads of the air and land forces. Also killed were the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

Andrei Yevseyenkov, spokesman for the Smolensk regional government, said Russian dispatchers asked the crew to divert from the military airport in North Smolensk and land instead in Minsk, the capital of neighboring Belarus, or in Moscow because of the fog.

While traffic controllers generally have the final word in whether it is safe for a plane to land, they can and do leave it to the pilots’ discretion.

The presidential plane was fully overhauled in December, the general director of the Aviakor aviation maintenance plant in Samara, Russia told Rossiya-24. The plant repaired the plane’s three engines, retrofitted electronic and navigation equipment and updated the interior, Alexei Gusev said. He said there could be no doubts that the plane was flightworthy.

“On this difficult day, Continental Virtual Airlines  stand with the Polish people in remembrance of their fallen loved ones !
